About me, the cats and the calender
These are not staged pet portraits and not generic cat images. The calendar brings together street cats photographed in Istanbul as they appear in the city itself — self-assured, curious, calm, alert and entirely at home in their surroundings
I’ve been working with a camera for decades, especially through travel and street photography in my home city of Hamburg. That eye for detail, light and timing keeps drawing me back to Istanbul, where my wife was born and where her parents still live. Through our regular visits, I came to recognise the city as something more than a destination: a city of cats.
Cats of Istanbul grew out of those visits. Rather than staged pet photography, the project focuses on street cats with presence and personality — cats that seem to belong to the rhythm of the city just as much as its ferries, hills and side streets.
What began as a small calendar project in 2023 has grown into an ongoing series. The current edition is the fourth, and the archive behind it continues to grow.
